You will have the opportunity solve a nature mystery or two and have the chance to be part of a service project to help the marsh! \nMarty Harding and Gary Noren\, co-authors of Fam: The Remarkable Story of a Canada Goose Adopted by Sandhill Cranes\, will bring their beloved true-life book to life at 11am and 1pm! Told through Marty’s words and Gary’s stunning photography\, Fam follows three years in the life of this extraordinary blended family – a heartwarming story of love\, inclusion\, and belonging. Join them for a reading and book signing at 11am and 1pm that will delight children and nature lovers of all ages.  Books will be available for purchase. \nVevas Food Truck will be serving up mac and cheese bowls\, tacos and burgers for your culinary delight! \nWe’ll also have reduced Explorium admission rates of $3 per person all day\, children 4 and under free. DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, March 7: 8:00am-12:30pm \nInterested in birdhouses\, but don’t know where to begin? Wondering what you can do to help cavity nesting animals? Head to the Horicon Marsh Education & Visitor Center on Saturday\, March 7th from 8:00 AM – 12:30 PM to bolster your nesting knowledge. Speakers will discuss popular nest boxes\, such as bluebirds and wood ducks.  Come for a specific topic or stay for all three. Whatever you choose\, these presentations will cover many topics to “brood” about for this upcoming nest season! \nDoors will open at 8:00am so that early birds can peruse displays on cavity nesting birds\, talk with DNR experts on how to attract birds to your yard or purchase your own nesting box. Speaker times will be 8:30am\, 9:45am and 11am. \nBluebird/tree swallow\, bat or Wood Duck boxes will available for purchase on site. Cash\, check or credit will be accepted.  The Friends of the Horicon Marsh Education and Visitor Center will provide kits and fully assembled boxes for sale. Donuts and coffee will also be available for a donation during the day. Get involved or learn more in the classrooms\, where there will be displays from local bird conservation organizations. \nFree entrance event\, and all ages are welcome. No registration required. For a detailed list of all Horicon Marsh Education and Visitor Center special events\, please visit the Friends of Horicon Marsh website at www.horiconmarsh.org. \nSpeaker Details \n8:30AM- Liz Herzmann\, Bluebirds \nSpeaker will be Liz Herzmann\, DNR Wildlife Conservation Educator and recipient of the 2021 Bluebird Restoration Association of Wisconsin (BRAW) educator of the year. \nLiz has lived the “new to the bluebird world” as a new homeowner 15 years ago.  She has experienced the trials and tribulations of establishing a successful nest box trail.  Liz now shares her experiences with her husband and 2 children at home along with her children’s classmates at Mayville Elementary School.  Liz has established a trail at the school to show students the wonders of the outdoors.  Liz is a wealth of outdoor knowledge from birds to butterflies to dragonflies to native plants. \n9:45AM- Christa Trushinsky – Bats \n \nChrista will present a talk focusing on bat boxes and their placement\, care and maintenance along with some biology and fun facts about Wisconsin bats. \nChrista has enjoyed more than 20 years of environmental education in both formal and informal settings and is proud to have been the naturalist and Director of Education for River Bend Nature Center since 2016. In the past\, she has worked with the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh and the Belize Zoo doing primate research in Central America and with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and the US Fish and Wildlife Service at Horicon Marsh performing wetland ecology research regarding muskrat populations and aquatic vegetation. After earning her master’s in Conservation Biology at UW-Madison\, she has become more involved with WAV (Water Action Volunteers)\, Snapshot Wisconsin\, the Wisconsin Bat Program\, and Wisconsin Master Naturalist’s Bat Ambassadors. \n11AM- Wood Ducks with Jeff Bahls: Making Wood Duck Boxes Pro”duck”tive \nJeff has placed and monitored Wood Duck nest boxes for over 30 years and in that time produced an estimated  16\,000 ducklings from the 150 nest boxes he supervises.  He will share his formula for success and lessons learned along the way.  He has been a lifelong outdoorsman with waterfowl leading the way into birding\, paddling and an appreciation of wetlands.

Thanks for your patience and we apologize for the inconvenience!  \nHoricon Marsh Candlelight Hike: Saturday\, January 17\, 5-9pm \nHiking by candlelight\, a roaring bonfire\, roasted marshmallows and warm refreshments await everyone at the 15th annual Horicon Marsh Candlelight Hike on Saturday\, Jan. 17\, 2026\, from 5-9p.m. \nHoricon Marsh Education and Visitor Center is located at N7725 Hwy 28\, Horicon\, WI between Horicon and Mayville. \nWe are always excited and humbled by the popularity of this event!  Due to parking limitations at the facility\, we are again requiring a parking voucher for attendees who park at the Horicon Marsh Education and Visitor Center.  Vouchers will be available January 1\, 2026.  Vouchers are free and per vehicle that reserve an arrival time slot.  Please only add 1 ticket per vehicle.  Attendees can arrive anytime during the timed window and can stay at the event as long as you’d like.  Watch the website www.horiconmarsh.org the week of the event as we will put cancelled vouchers back into the system for people to use.  Didn’t get a voucher\, don’t worry\, this year we will also be offering a free shuttle sponsored by Horicon Bank\, from Theiler Park in Mayville.   We are allowing people to be dropped off at the education center if a ride is available or you may walk over from the Palmatory Street trails in Horicon. \nThe Candlelight Hike is sponsored and hosted by the Friends of Horicon Marsh Education and Visitor Center and Wisconsin DNR.  Volunteers and staff will line the trails with candle-powered luminaries to welcome and guide hikers.  There are two trails available to enjoy. One trail is 1.5 miles and another “Family Loop” is only .36 miles. \nThe Horicon Marsh Education and Visitor Center will be open for people to warm up\, visit the gift shop\, participate in an education program or have the kids do a fun craft to bring home!  The Horicon Marsh Explorium will also be open at a discounted rate of $3 per person (4 and under free) for people to learn about Horicon Marsh through these new interactive displays. \nThe Northern Cross Science Foundation astronomers will be on site to help you view the night sky through telescopes or to talk about the stars if it is cloudy. Members of the Horicon Marsh Bird Club will be on the trail conducting short owl talks and calling for owls. You can also learn about Wisconsin’s mammals on the short “Family Loop” trail!  You are welcome to bring your own snowshoes if conditions permit.  Leashed pets are allowed on the trails\, but not in the building. \nWarm beverages and a bake sale will be available outdoors at the picnic shelter and popcorn inside.  You can also roast your own marshmallows in a smaller firepit and then enjoy by the bonfire. \nThis is an admission free\, family friendly event thanks to the Friends of Horicon Marsh Education and Visitor Center and Wisconsin DNR.  Multiple baskets will be raffled off to help support the Friends group and future candlelight events.  Donations are always welcome and directly support events such as this and many other educational programs throughout the year.  If you wish to make a donation you can do so through our website horiconmarsh.org or in person at the event.  Donate Now. \nWe will also be conducting a food and mitten drive to donate to local schools and food pantries. \nFor more information\, call 920-210-9054 or visit our website horiconmarsh.org.
