SUMMARY:Nest Box Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Interested in birdhouses\, but don’t know where to begin? Wondering what you can do to help cavity nesting animals? Head to the Horicon Marsh Education & Visitor Center on Saturday\, March 4th from 8:30 AM – 12:30 PM to bolster your nesting knowledge. Speakers will discuss popular nest boxes\, such as bluebirds and wood ducks. Live raptors will be sure to engage participants of all ages! Come for a specific topic or stay for all three. Whatever you choose\, these presentations will cover many topics to “brood” about for this upcoming nest season! \nDoors will open at 8:30am so that early birds can peruse displays on cavity nesting birds\, talk with DNR experts on how to attract birds to your yard or purchase your own nesting box.  A schedule of speakers is as follows. \n9 AM: Live\, Cavity Nesting Raptors: Learn about nesting raptors and see some live birds up close! Presented by Renee Wahlen\, Executive Director of Marsh Haven Nature Center. \n10 AM: Bluebirds: Identify prime bluebird real estate and how to attract mating pairs\, too! Presented by Pat Ready\, Bluebird Restoration Association of Wisconsin. \n11 AM: Wood Ducks; Make your Boxes Pro“duck”tive”: Discover the best ways to make your nest boxes pro-duck-tive! Presented by Jeff Bahls\, President of the Horicon Marsh Bird Club. \nBluebird/tree swallow or wood duck boxes are available for purchase on site.  The Friends of the Horicon Marsh Education and Visitor Center will provide kits and fully assembled boxes for sale. Donuts and coffee will also be available for a donation during the day. Get involved or learn more in the classrooms\, where there will be displays from local bird conservation organizations: Horicon Marsh Bird Club\, Marsh Haven Nature Center\, Wood Duck Society\, Horicon NWR\, and Wisconsin DNR. \nFree event\, and all ages are welcome. SUMMARY:Horicon Marsh Bird Club Meeting: Wood Duck Research
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, March 16th\, 6:30-8pm \nWood Duck Research \nAndrew Greenawalt is a current Graduate Research Assistant at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. His  research focuses on wood duck population  and migration chronology. Greenawalt used novel technology to understand migratory patterns\, stopover locations\, and annual cycles of wood ducks that breed in Wisconsin. He will soon develop reports and manuscripts for publication of the findings and hope to use some of this information to guide wood duck population management for the future within the Upper Mississippi Great Lakes Region. \nAndy has captured and marked over 1\,000 wood ducks in his two-year thesis research and deployed 300 geolocators (on female wood ducks) to a subset of theses capture individuals. With this collected data he can then examine migratory patterns\, migratory stopovers\, and winter/summer distribution. DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, March 19\, 8am-12pm \nEarly Waterfowl Field Trip \n\n\n\nMeet at 8 AM at the McDonalds Hwy 33 & 151 in Beaver Dam. From here we will caravan to open water spots on Beaver Dam Lake and the Beaver Dam River. We will search for waterfowl of all kinds.
