SUMMARY:Horicon Marsh Candlelight Hike (Parking Voucher Required)
DESCRIPTION:Horicon Marsh Candlelight Hike: Saturday\, January 18\, 5-9pm \nHiking by candlelight\, a roaring bonfire\, roasted marshmallows and warm refreshments await everyone at the 14th annual Horicon Marsh Candlelight Hike on Saturday\, Jan. 18\, 2025 from 5-9p.m. \nHoricon Marsh Education and Visitor Center is located at N7725 Hwy 28\, Horicon\, WI between Horicon and Mayville. \nWe are always excited and humbled by the popularity of this event!  Due to parking limitations at the facility\, we are again requiring a parking voucher for attendees who park at the Horicon Marsh Education and Visitor Center.  Vouchers will be available January 1\, 2025.  Vouchers are free and per vehicle that reserve an arrival time slot.  Please only add 1 ticket per vehicle.  Attendees can arrive anytime during the timed window and can stay at the event as long as you’d like.  Watch the website www.horiconmarsh.org the week of the event as we will put cancelled vouchers back into the system for people to use.  Didn’t get a voucher\, don’t worry\, this year we will also be offering a free shuttle sponsored by Horicon Bank\, from Theiler Park in Mayville.   We are allowing people to be dropped off at the education center if a ride is available or you may walk over from the Palmatory Street trails in Horicon. \nThe Candlelight Hike is sponsored and hosted by the Friends of Horicon Marsh Education and Visitor Center and Wisconsin DNR.  Volunteers and staff will line the trails with candle-powered luminaries to welcome and guide hikers.  There are two trails available to enjoy. One trail is 1.5 miles and another “Family Loop” is only .36 miles. \nThe Horicon Marsh Education and Visitor Center will be open for people to warm up\, visit the gift shop\, participate in an education program or have the kids do a fun craft to bring home!  The Horicon Marsh Explorium will also be open at a discounted rate of $2 per person (4 and under free) for people to learn about Horicon Marsh through these new interactive displays. \nThe Northern Cross Science Foundation astronomers will be on site to help you view the night sky through telescopes or to talk about the stars if it is cloudy. Members of the Horicon Marsh Bird Club will be on the trail conducting short owl talks and calling for owls. You can also learn about Wisconsin’s mammals on the short “Family Loop” trail!  You are welcome to bring your own snowshoes if conditions permit.  Leashed pets are allowed on the trails\, but not in the building. \nWarm beverages and a bake sale will be available outdoors at the picnic shelter and popcorn inside.  You can also roast your own marshmallows in a smaller firepit and then enjoy by the bonfire. \nThis is an admission free\, family friendly event thanks to the Friends of Horicon Marsh Education and Visitor Center and Wisconsin DNR.  Multiple baskets will be raffled off to help support the Friends group and future candlelight events.  Donations are always welcome and directly support events such as this and many other educational programs throughout the year.  If you wish to make a donation you can do so through our website horiconmarsh.org or in person at the event.  Donate Now. \nWe will also be conducting a food and mitten drive to donate to local schools and food pantries. \nFor more information\, call 920-210-9054 or visit our website horiconmarsh.org. SUMMARY:Horicon Marsh Bird Club: Galapagos Islands
DESCRIPTION:February Meeting: Barb Vockroth & Angie Kirst – Galapagos Islands \nThursday\, February 20th at 6:30pm\n\nJoin us at 6:30pm for the February 20th meeting of the Horicon Marsh Bird Club.  Bird Club members Barb Vockroth and Angie Kirst will be speaking about their recent trip to the Galapagos Islands.  The meeting is open to the public and is held at the Horicon Marsh Education and Visitor Center located at N7725 Highway 28\, Horicon\, WI.  Snacks before and after the program will be provided. \n\nTremper Travel Club provided an opportunity to travel to the Galapagos.  They explored Quito at the beginning and the end of their 10 day trip\, which included touring the colonial quarter of Quito which is a UNESCO Heritage Site. A “high point” was visiting the Intinan Museum to discover how the Incas determined the middle of the earth. Then they actually stood in both hemispheres. \nFrom Quito they flew to San Cristobal to begin their Galapagos adventure. They visited three diverse islands in the Galapagos including Santa Cruz\, home of the Charles Darwin Research Station and Isabela\, the largest and most populated island. Each island was its own world with different species of flora\, fauna and diversity of topography. It was amazing to see species of tortoises\, penguins\, finches\, iguanas\, boobies and sea lions not seen anywhere else on earth. It felt like prehistoric times as they hiked on lava rock and snorkeled through lava tunnels that held an incredible diversity of marine life. \nReturning to Quito they hiked Mindo Cloud Forest and visited incredible butterfly gardens and hummingbird preserves. They experienced the diverse cultures of Ecuador by enjoying musical performances and weaving demonstrations. They also learned to haggle at the markets and eat guinea pig. They were impressed by the pride and respect of the people of the Galapagos and Ecuador toward preservation of their environment for the animals and future generations of inhabitants. \nBarb and Angie are retired teachers from Beaver Dam.  They also are volunteer naturalists at the Horicon Marsh Education and Visitor Center. \nFor more information contact Liz Herzmann at 920-210-9054 or elizabeth.herzmann@wisconsin.gov.

SUMMARY:Nest Box Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, March 1: 8:00am-12:30pm \nInterested in birdhouses\, but don’t know where to begin? Wondering what you can do to help cavity nesting animals? Head to the Horicon Marsh Education & Visitor Center on Saturday\, March 1st from 8:00 AM – 12:30 PM to bolster your nesting knowledge. Speakers will discuss popular nest boxes\, such as bluebirds and wood ducks. This year we will feature\, Danielle Bell as she discusses  how to provide habitat and food by incorporating native plants.  Come for a specific topic or stay for all three. Whatever you choose\, these presentations will cover many topics to “brood” about for this upcoming nest season! \nDoors will open at 8:00am so that early birds can peruse displays on cavity nesting birds\, talk with DNR experts on how to attract birds to your yard or purchase your own nesting box. A schedule of speakers is as follows. \n\n8:30 AM: Jeff Bahls\, President of the Horicon Marsh Bird Club. Wood Ducks and How we Can Help.\n\nJoin Horicon Marsh Bird Club president\, Jeff Bahls as he relays some of the lessons he has learned over the 30+ years of Wood Duck box management. The Wood Duck is Jeff’s favorite bird and it keeps him entertained about 10 months out of the year.  Jeff oversees about 170 Wood duck nest boxes annually and has produced 5\,834 ducklings since 2013.  Those boxes also produced young of 10 other species of birds. Learn how to keep those nest boxes pro”duck”tive. \n\n9:45 AM:  Danielle Bell\, owner of Native Roots Design: Providing for our Feathered Friends.\n\nBirds need more than store-bought birdseed and birdbaths to thrive; they require suitable nesting sites\, nutritious food\, and insects to feed their young. Native plants provide these essential resources while adding beauty to your landscapes. They also support pollinators like bees and butterflies\, creating a healthier\, more diverse ecosystem. In this talk\, we will explore how you can attract a variety of bird species to your yard using native plants. We’ll also highlight specific native plants that are crucial for providing food\, shelter\, and habitat for migrating and residential birds throughout the year \n\n11AM:  David Misterek\, Bluebird Restoration Association of Wisconsin Member.\n\nDave has been monitoring nearly 40 boxes at the Utica Golf Course for the last 10+ years.  His program\, Wings Over Winnebago\, will highlight the needs of bluebirds but also dive into the importance of bluebird boxes to tree swallows in Eastern Wisconsin. \nBluebird/tree swallow or wood duck boxes are available for purchase on site. The Friends of the Horicon Marsh Education and Visitor Center will provide kits and fully assembled boxes for sale. Donuts and coffee will also be available for a donation during the day. Get involved or learn more in the classrooms\, where there will be displays from local bird conservation organizations: Horicon Marsh Bird Club\, Marsh Haven Nature Center\, Wood Duck Society\, Bluebird Restoration Association of Wisconsin\, Horicon NWR\, Friends of Horicon Marsh Education and Visitor Center and Wisconsin DNR. \nFree entrance event\, and all ages are welcome. No registration required. For more information\, call 920-387-7893 or e-mail Elizabeth.herzmann@wisconsin.gov. \nThe Horicon Marsh Education and Visitor Center is located between Horicon and Mayville at N7725 Highway 28\, Horicon.
