SUMMARY:Horicon Marsh Bird Club: Gull ID
DESCRIPTION:October 17th 6:30 PM meeting- Amar Ayyash – Gull ID\n\nOctober 17 @ 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm\n\n\n\nWe are fortunate to get one of the country’s leading authorities on gull identification for this meeting. \nA Closer Look at Gull ID \nOften approached with apprehension\, gulls have gained a love-hate relationship with many birders. Among these larids are some of the most coveted bird species in the world. Amar will highlight key identification field marks for separating our most common gull species\, and he will also touch on some of the often-ignored topics in gull-study such as the aging process\, plumage and molt. Come learn why an increasing number of people are being drawn to this family of birds and are eagerly calling themselves “larophiles”. \nAmar Ayyash is both an expert on the gulls of North America and an evangelist for “gull recreation”. He coordinates the Illinois Ornithological Society’s Annual Gull Frolic on Lake Michigan\, hosts the popular website anythinglarus.com\, and is often found speaking at birding events throughout the continent. Much of his free time is dedicated to traveling the world to photograph and study gulls. Ayyash has published a number of papers and articles on gull identification\, distribution\, and molt. He is the author of the upcoming book\, The Gull Guide. Amar lives in northern Illinois where he teaches mathematics. \nThis meeting will be in person and on Zoom. If you choose to attend on Zoom\, you will need to pre-register at https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZYqdO6gqTojGNcZeRqfU3I8gs7lV09-pEw5.  The Horicon Marsh Education and Visitor Center is located at N7725 Highway 28\, Horicon\, WI.

SUMMARY:ZOOM ONLY: Bird Club Meeting: Clicking for Conservation: Why Cameras are the Most Important Tool in Modern Conservation
DESCRIPTION:11-21-24 Update: Due to unfavorable weather throughout the day today\, tonight’s Horicon Marsh Bird Club program will be all virtual. If you have not signed up for Clicking for Conservation: Why Cameras are the Most Important Tool in Modern Conservation you can do so here.  https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZ0of-ioqjotHtbEo4zoYVhVoHHWF_8T8n7b \nThursday\, November 21st at 6:30pm \nJoin us at 6:30pm for the November meeting of the Horicon Marsh Bird Club.  Blake Richard of the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife will be speaking on Clicking for Conservation: Why Cameras are the Most Important Tool in Modern Conservation.  The meeting is open to the public and is held at the Horicon Marsh Education and Visitor Center located at N7725 Highway 28\, Horicon\, WI. \nJoin us before and after for some snacks and socializing! For those who cannot join us in person\, you can register to join us on Zoom\, here. \nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/89581041742?pwd=H4y1oxU1N6qgLcj3hCiJtVo3FHf8fI.1 \nThis presentation will cover how Blake\, and others\, use and have used\, photographs in each of their unique and diverse experiences. From DSLR and mirrorless cameras to trail cameras and drones\, each camera serves a purpose in managing wildlife and conserving them for stakeholders—present and future. From grizzly bears caught eating goose eggs and bird migrations tracked unimaginable distances\, to educational blogs\, social media outreach\, and invasive species\, cameras caught it all. \nBlake grew up in Park Falls\, Wisconsin\, and\, not far from home\, got a degree in Natural Resources from Northland College in 2024. His first professional experience in wildlife management was with the Wisconsin DNR in 2021\, which eventually blossomed into a new experience in Alaska with Ducks Unlimited in 2022. As a Ducks Unlimited Intern\, Blake helped monitor dusky Canada geese as part of the Dusky Canada Goose Artificial Nest Island Program. The following summer he helped with a red knot survey in Controller Bay\, Alaska\, before coming home and finishing the summer with the Iron County Land & Water Conservation Department. After graduating from Northland College\, Blake went back to Alaska for another season of red knot field work before going even further north to Utqiagvik\, Alaska to work with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service on an eider project. Currently he is in Moses Lake\, Washington working as a Natural Resources Specialist with the Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife. \nThroughout it all\, Blake has become accustomed to taking his camera with him and sharing wildlife work through his perspective. Blake has written blogs for an educational following\, contributed photos to annual reports and\, and helped manage social media accounts to increase recruitments for a generation that may be less likely to be outside. He’s learned a lot\, but the most important thing all his experiences has helped him realize is that the world changes according to the way people see it.
