SUMMARY:Campfire Stories- Magnificent Moth
DESCRIPTION:Campfire Stories- Magnificent Moths: Friday\, July 25\, 6:30-8pm \nGather the family and spend some time together around the campfire as we share stories at the Horicon Marsh. Each month we will have a different topic that we explore through books\, crafts\, and adventure. We will finish the night with a sweet treat that we get to cook over the fire. \nIt’s National Moth Week so let’s celebrate the beauty of the moths that call the Marsh home! We will learn how to tell the difference between moths and butterflies\, their lifecycle and how to spot them all while enjoying the campfire! There will be a short family friendly hike to our spotlight to see if we can lure in some moths.  This month’s sweet treat will be Cinnamon Bun Twists. Please bring a low power flashlight and bug spray. \nNo registration is required.  The Horicon Marsh Education and Visitor Center is located at N7725 Highway 28\, Horicon\, WI.  Meet at the picnic shelter.  For additional information please contact Liz Herzmann at 920-210-9054 or elizabeth.herzmann@wisconsin.gov.

SUMMARY:Bats: Silence of the Night
DESCRIPTION:Bats: Silence of the Night: Friday\, August 15\, 7:30-9pm \nBats fly seemingly silent through the night sky. The science of bioacoustics has taught us otherwise. Beyond our limited hearing range\, bats emit high frequency calls to locate prey. Through the combined power of science and technology\, humans have learned to identify bat species by their ultrasonic calls. \nJoin Christa Trushinsky from the Wisconsin Bat Program to learn more about bioacoustics monitoring and how it is being used in the conservation efforts of Wisconsin’s bat population. After a short presentation we will hit the trails\, so please bring bug spray.  Ages 10+ for this event. \nNo registration is required.  Please meet at the Horicon Marsh Education and Visitor Center located at N7725 Highway 28\, Horicon\, WI.  For additional information please contact Liz Herzmann at 920-210-9054 or elizabeth.herzmann@wisconsin.gov.

SUMMARY:A Bird Who Sat in Fire
DESCRIPTION:A Bird Who Sat in Fire: Thursday\, September 18\, 6:30pm. \nJoin The Horicon Marsh Bird Club on Thursday\, September 18th\, 2025 at 6:30pm at the Horicon Marsh Education and Visitor Center for a program featuring Blake Richard of the United States Fish & Wildlife Service (USFWS). The meeting is open to the public and is held at the Horicon Marsh Education and Visitor Center located at N7725 Highway 28\, Horicon\, WI. \nMr. Richard will present his experiences as a project volunteer with USFWS in Utqiagvik\, Alaska. His professional work has focused on the conservation of endangered Steller’s and Spectacled Eider ducks\, while his time in Alaska provided unique opportunities for observing rare birds\, encountering polar bears under the midnight sun\, experiencing snowfall in July\, and participating in local cultural events such as nalukataq. The Inupiaq name for Steller’s Eider\, Igniqauqtuq\, means “the bird who sat in fire.” \nOriginating from Wisconsin and raised near the Ruffed Grouse Capital\, Mr. Richard developed a strong connection to wildlife from a young age. Summers spent on the Rock River and autumns hunting in Spooner\, WI played an influential role in his appreciation for natural resources. Before joining the Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife\, he attended Northland College and gained valuable experience working in Alaska with Ducks Unlimited\, the Alaska Department of Fish & Game\, and USFWS. His passion for avian species\, particularly waterfowl\, and dedication to conservation continue to grow\, complemented by interests in photography and writing. \nThis meeting will be available in person and on Zoom.
