SUMMARY:Horicon Marsh Bird Festival
DESCRIPTION:29th Horicon Marsh Bird Festival \n\nMay 8– May 10\, 2026\nHoricon Marsh Bird Club invites birders of all skill levels—as well as anyone who enjoys the great outdoors—to the Annual Horicon Marsh Bird Festival. This weekend-long event provides family-friendly activities and educational experiences designed to showcase Horicon Marsh’s role as an important habitat for birds and wildlife. The festival will include birding\, bus tours\, Whooping Crane tours\, smaller more intimate guided tours\, and so much more!  The Horicon Marsh vast wetland is both a State Wildlife Area and a National Wildlife Refuge. Originally established as habitat for migrating and nesting ducks\, it has since become a stopover for Canada Geese. Today\, Horicon Marsh is increasingly recognized and managed as a wetland ecosystem for all of its plants and animals. Horicon Marsh has been designated as a Wetland of International Importance by the Ramsar Convention and a Global Important Bird Area by the American Bird Conservancy. No group of wildlife better represents the vitality of this marsh better than its birds. Over the years\, a total of 300+ species of birds have been sighted on this marsh. \nIf you’re a birder or a naturalist or just someone who enjoys the beauty of nature we encourage you to come visit Horicon Marsh. The Horicon Marsh Bird Festival will focus on introducing visitors to many of these birds at the peak of the spring migration. \nPack up your binoculars and join us! \nRegistration will be open after February 1st\, 2026 on the Horicon Marsh Bird Club’s webpage linked here: Festival Event Schedule – Horicon Marsh Bird Club

SUMMARY:Bird Lab
DESCRIPTION:Bird Lab\n\nMay 9 @ 9:30 am – 3:00 pm\n\n\n\nBring your family out for the Horicon Marsh Bird Festival but\, before the kids hit the trails in search of birds\, bring them into the Visitor Center to make their own binoculars! We will have a make-and-take station all weekend where kids can decorate their own binoculars with stickers\, markers and more! \nJoin us for a bird banding activity with a twist where you get to be the bird! After getting trapped in our “mist net\,” we will take your measurements just like if you were a real bird. You will even get a band to take home. Learn the important role bird banding plays in conservation with this hands-on activity. \nFrom 9:30am-3pm try out your bird skills!  Can you run faster than a Peregrine Falcon can fly? Can you flap your arms faster than a hummingbird can flap their wings? Test your athletic ability at the Bird Olympics! You will be competing against the best birds in their sport. Have fun trying to beat their adaptations and learn some cool facts along the way. Visit the classrooms to try your hand\, or should we say beak\, at eating like a bird.  Find out why a bird’s beak is critical to their survival. \nFor more information\, contact Liz Herzmann at 920-210-9054 or elizabeth.herzmann@wisconsin.gov. \nFree. No registration required.

SUMMARY:Wildflowers for Wildlife
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, May 16\, 9:30am-1:30pm. \nCreate a beautiful native garden with colorful flowers that attract butterflies\, birds and pollinating insects\, and find the plants to use. The Horicon Marsh Education and Visitor Center is the location for the 2026 Wildflowers for Wildlife event on Saturday\, May 16 from 9:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. The education center is located at N7725 Highway 28\, Horicon\, WI. \nThis year we are continuing our partnership with a new native plant business called Bombus.  Nestled in the hills of Wisconsin’s driftless area near Dodgeville\, WI\, Bombus is a woman-owned small business. The name “Bombus” comes from the Bumblebee’s scientific genus name and is a nod to the company’s commitment to the health of our native pollinators. While Bombus itself is new on the scene\, founder Corrine Daniels\, “Corrie”\, is not. She and her husband\, Patrick\, have more than 25 years of restoration and native nursery experience. Corrie formerly served as the director of Applied Ecological Services’ Taylor Creek Restoration Nurseries. She now grows natives full-time on her family’s historic dairy farm with the help of her husband\, daughters and 80 year-old father. The family is thrilled to bring life back to the former dairy farm where Corrie and her father grew up and her grandmother was born. They are equally delighted to bring you natives lovingly grown in the rich farmlands of Wisconsin. \nWhy native plants? Native landscaping restores ecosystems that once covered the Midwestern landscape but are now reduced to small parcels. Once native plants are restored\, the birds\, mammals\, reptiles and beneficial insects return too. Native plants also enrich the soil\, decrease run-off and filter pollution. In the long run\, native landscaping can save money annually in maintenance costs. Native plants have evolved to thrive in a local environment\, which means less watering\, fertilizer and time. Experts will be on hand to answer all of your questions! \nPartners include\, Bombus\, Friends of Horicon Marsh Education and Visitor Center\, WDNR\, Friends of Horicon National Wildlife Refuge and the USFWS. \nNative plants are available for pre-order until March 31\, 2026. We will have both paper and online pre-orders.  Information for both can be found on the pre-order form here. \nFor a direct link to the online order form go to https://www.bombus.eco/ and keyword search “Horicon” \n2026 Wildflowers for Wildlife pre-order form FINAL. \nInformation on native plants can be found here.  Native Plant Info \nFor more information about plants contact\, Jennifer Kakatsch at jennifer.kakatsch@wisconsin.gov or by phone at (920) 387-7889.  For details about the sale\, please contact Liz Herzmann at elizabeth.herzmann@wisconsin.gov or 920-210-9054. \nThe Horicon Marsh Education and Visitor Center is located between Horicon and Mayville on Highway 28.
