SUMMARY:Wildflowers for Wildlife
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, May 18\, 9:30am-1:30pm. \nCreate a beautiful native garden with colorful flowers that attract butterflies\, birds and pollinating insects\, and find the plants to use. The Horicon Marsh Education and Visitor Center is the location for the 2024 Wildflowers for Wildlife event on Saturday\, May 18 from 9:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. The education center is located at N7725 Highway 28\, Horicon\, WI. \nNew this year\, we are partnering with a brand-new native plant business called Bombus.  Nestled in the hills of Wisconsin’s driftless area near Dodgeville\, WI\, Bombus is a woman-owned small business. The name “Bombus” comes from the Bumblebee’s scientific genus name and is a nod to the company’s commitment to the health of our native pollinators. While Bombus itself is new on the scene\, founder Corrine Daniels\, “Corrie”\, is not. She and her husband\, Patrick\, have more than 25 years of restoration and native nursery experience. Corrie formerly served as the director of Applied Ecological Services’ Taylor Creek Restoration Nurseries. She now grows natives full-time on her family’s historic dairy farm with the help of her husband\, daughters and 80 year-old father. The family is thrilled to bring life back to the former dairy farm where Corrie and her father grew up and her grandmother was born. They are equally delighted to bring you natives lovingly grown in the rich farmlands of Wisconsin. \nWhy native plants? Native landscaping restores ecosystems that once covered the Midwestern landscape but are now reduced to small parcels. Once native plants are restored\, the birds\, mammals\, reptiles and beneficial insects return too. Native plants also enrich the soil\, decrease run-off and filter pollution. In the long run\, native landscaping can save money annually in maintenance costs. Native plants have evolved to thrive in a local environment\, which means less watering\, fertilizer and time. Experts will be on hand to answer all of your questions! \nPartners include\, Bombus\, Friends of Horicon Marsh Education and Visitor Center\, WDNR\, Friends of Horicon National Wildlife Refuge and the USFWS. \nNative plants are available for pre-order until March 31\, 2024. Full flats of a single species are $69 and half flats are $38.  No mix and match.  Tax of 5.5% is not included in these prices.  The pre-order form is located here 2024 Wildflowers for Wildlife pre-order form \nInformation on native plants can be found here.  Native Plant Info \nFor the day of sale\, individual plants will be $4.50 and mix and match flats $112 (tax is included).  No additional fee if using credit cards. For more information about plants contact\, Jennifer Kakatsch at jennifer.kakatsch@wisconsin.gov or by phone at (920) 387-7889.  For details about the sale\, please contact Liz Herzmann at elizabeth.herzmann@wisconsin.gov or 920-210-9054. \nThe Horicon Marsh Education and Visitor Center is located between Horicon and Mayville on Highway 28. For a detailed list of all Horicon Marsh Education and Visitor Center special events\, please visit the Friends of Horicon Marsh website at www.horiconmarsh.org. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Horicon Marsh Paddle (Postponed to July 13)
DESCRIPTION:6-21-24 Update: We have unfortunately just made the decision to cancel the Horicon Marsh Paddle based on the weather forecast.  Safety is our first priority.  We will host a shorter\, modified event on Saturday\, July 13\, from 8am-12pm. Watch for more details on our Facebook page or www.horiconmarsh.org.  Thanks! \nHoricon Marsh Paddle: Saturday\, June 22\, 7:30am-1pm \nOn Saturday\, June 22\, from 7:00 AM to 1:00 PM you can join fellow outdoor enthusiasts to paddle the six-and-a-half-mile paddling trail through the Horicon Marsh State Wildlife Area. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources’ wildlife staff will be on hand to help guide your paddle while educating about marsh wildlife as you travel downstream through the Horicon Marsh and into the Rock River. \nFeatures along the 6.5 mile trail at the Horicon Marsh State Wildlife Are include: Listening and talking to wildlife staff from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) who will be posted at various stopping places along the canoe/kayak trail\, a free shuttle back to your vehicle\, help loading and unloading your vessel\, and free parking. The trail starts at the Green Head Boat Landing and ends at Nebraska St. Landing in Horicon. \nThere is an open launch time between 7:30 and 10:00am at the Green Head Boat Landing.  If you launch after these times\, you run the risk of missing the shuttle back to your car.  The route will take 3-4 hours depending on the wind conditions.  Please plan accordingly.  This can be a challenging paddle in windy conditions. Not recommended for your first ever paddle. \nThe DNR wildlife staff will briefly cover topics related to the marsh’s wildlife and will be available for any other questions.  This is a great opportunity to talk with experts and learn from some of the people that work at the marsh every day. Also\, restroom facilities will be available at the beginning and end of the trail. \nA free shuttle will be provided by Johnson Bus. It will run from 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. from Nebraska Street Boat Landing in Horicon back to your vehicle at Green Head Boat Landing. \nFor trail maps or other paddle Horicon Marsh information\, contact 920-387-7893 or go to www.horiconmarsh.org.
