SUMMARY:Starry Night on the Marsh
DESCRIPTION:Starry Night on the Marsh is coming to the Horicon Marsh Education and Visitor Center on Friday\, September 9. This family-friendly event\, which focuses on nocturnal animals and astronomy\, starts promptly at 6:00\, and it promises a full schedule of fun activities\, interesting presentations\, and hands-on experience opportunities. DNR staff at Horicon Marsh\, Friends of Horicon Marsh volunteers and seven Dodge County libraries will provide a wide array of activities and crafts from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Activities include an owl pellet dissection\, trivia games\, constellation crafts\, star-parachute games and more! The Marsh will give a presentation on nocturnal animals at 6:30\, and members of the Northern Cross Science Foundation will discuss telescopes and the night sky at 7:15. Starting at 8:00\, members of the Northern Cross Science Foundation will share telescopes for public viewing of the night sky (weather permitting). Bake sale items and snacks will be available as well. \nDon’t miss this fun and educational event! What we can do to keep wild birds in Wisconsin healthy by Nancy Businga\, Wildlife Disease Specialist \nThe presentation will provide an overview of some of the common causes of wild bird mortality in Wisconsin’s birds\, including an update on the highly pathogenic avian influenza outbreak\, suggestions for protecting bird’s health and how to report sick or dead birds to the DNR. \nNancy has worked as a wildlife disease specialist for the DNR for the past 18 years\, leading wildlife mortality investigations and disease surveillance efforts. DESCRIPTION:October 8-9 10am-4pm\nHoricon Marsh Archaeology Festival\nSponsored by the Rock River Archaeological Society\n\n\nRock River Archaeological Society\, a chapter of the Wisconsin Archaeological Society\, is a nonprofit organization for those who are interested in archaeology and/or human history.  The Horicon Marsh Archaeological Festival has been named the best Archaeological Festival in Wisconsin. \nFeatured at the Horicon Marsh Archaeological Festival will be the Fox of the River Voyageur Canoe giving rides on the water of the Marsh\, a Buck Skinner encampment with a flute and drum circle\, atlatl demonstration and instruction\, tomahawk throwing\, flint knapping demonstration\, home cooked food including a wild rice soup\, corn grinding demonstration\, leather stamping to make a necklace\, bead collecting for children\, wagon rides behind antique tractors between the Buck Skinner encampment and the Education Center\, artifact display of Native American artifacts\, vendors offering handmade items and much\, much more. \nThe Festival is FREE to the public and takes place at the Horicon Marsh Education and Visitor Center\, N7725 Hwy. 28\, Horicon\, WI\, 53032.  The hours of the event are Saturday\, October 8\, 2022\, 10 AM to 4 PM;  Sunday\, October 9\, 2022\, 10 AM to 3 PM. \n\nFor more information please contact Liz Herzmann at 920-210-9054 or elizabeth.herzmann@wisconsin.gov.

DESCRIPTION:Friday\, October 14\, 3-6pm- Guided Out and Back Horicon Marsh Paddle (Limit 15) \nJoin DNR staff\, on a guided canoe or kayak of Horicon Marsh State Wildlife Area during the peak of Fall Migration! This will be an out and back paddle starting from the Greenhead Boat Landing just outside of Mayville.  Pre-registration required and $15 fee per person. Free to Friends of Horicon Marsh Education and Visitor Center Members. Limit of 15 participants. 2-3 mile paddle.  No bathroom facilities. \nMust provide own kayak/canoe\, paddle\, PFD. DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, October 15 from 4:30-6pm.\nJoin educators at the Palmatory Picnic Shelter an hour before sunset at 4:30pm for an informative talk on the birds you see flying overhead. Food will be available for a suggested donation while you enjoy the evening. \nSandhill cranes\, Canada geese\, great egrets and a variety of ducks are just a few of the amazing migrants that will be flying into the marsh to roost at sunset. \nMembers of the Horicon Marsh Bird Club will also be on hand to answer all your bird migration questions! A representative from the International Crane Foundation (ICF) will also be present to answer all your burning crane related questions! \nSoup\, chili\, baked items\, ice cream and other goodies will be available for a suggested donation to the Horicon Marsh Bird Club or Friends of Horicon Marsh. \nAll programs are free and open to the public. DESCRIPTION:Gratitude Hike on the Short Loop Trail \nSaturday\, November 12\, 10am-4:00pm \nIn the month of November we often spend time reflecting on what we are thankful for. Join us as we create a space and set aside time to take hike on our Short Loop Trail (0.3 miles). Along the trail you will find markers that prompt you to stop and reflect on your surroundings and enjoy the peace that can come from spending time in nature. This is a beautiful opportunity to get the family out and teach your kiddos about practicing daily gratitude. Also\, be sure to stop inside our Education Center to enjoy some hot chocolate while kids have the chance to engage by making a thoughtful craft! Please come and enjoy at your leisure as this is an open house style event running from 10:00am – 4:00pm. We hope to see you there.
