SUMMARY:Bees\, Birds\, Blooms and Your Native Garden Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Note: The Horicon Marsh Education and Visitor Center is closed due to a boiler malfunction.  The event will now be held at the Mayville Public Library.  This event requires registration and has a limit of 60. \nBees\, Birds\, Blooms and Your Native Garden Workshop\, March 16\, 10am-12pm \nPollinator gardening is on the rise as “wild” gardens have become a trend\, and birdwatching has grown exponentially over the past few years. Join Jennifer Lazewski\, Executive Director of the Wisconsin Society for Ornithology and Master Gardener Volunteer educator\, on Saturday\, March 16 from 10am-12pm for a presentation and garden design workshop.  Help pollinators thrive with native plants and continuous blooms! Feed birds with the seeds and fruit created by those pollinators! Travel through the seasons from spring to fall learning about native bees and birds\, their annual life cycles\, and the native plants that support them. \nImmediately following the presentation\, you are invited to join Jennifer and DNR staff for a hands-on native garden planning workshop.  We will provide you with a grid and plant templates to help you create your own native garden masterpiece.  If possible\, please bring along a Google Earth printout of your yard\, along with the space dimensions\, lighting and soil type of the desired area. We would love to offer you suggestions and ideas to help transform your yard into a pollinator paradise! \nIn addition to her birding conservation job\, Jennifer Lazewski has been a Master Gardener Volunteer educator in Milwaukee County since 2015. She focuses on native plants and gardening for pollinators\, birds\, and other wildlife. Jennifer is also a Master Naturalist who volunteers in land management and community science projects such as the Bumble Bee Brigade. She continues to expand the native habitat in her urban Wauwatosa yard and learn more about the different insects\, birds and other wildlife that live in it. \nPlease register at https://horiconmarsh.org/event/bees-birds-blooms-and-your-native-garden-workshop/ for this FREE workshop.   For additional information please contact Liz Herzmann at 920-210-9054 or elizabeth.herzmann@wisconsin.gov.

The festival will include birding\, bus tours\, Whooping Crane tours\, smaller more intimate guided tours\, and so much more! The Horicon Marsh vast wetland is both a State Wildlife Area and a National Wildlife Refuge. Horicon Marsh has been designated as a Wetland of International Importance by the Ramsar Convention and a Global Important Bird Area by the American Bird Conservancy. No group of wildlife better represents the vitality of this marsh better than its birds. Over the years\, a total of 304 species of birds have been sighted on this marsh. \nIf you’re a birder or a naturalist or just someone who enjoys the beauty of nature we encourage you to come visit Horicon Marsh. The Horicon Marsh Bird Festival will focus on introducing visitors to many of these birds at the peak of the spring migration. \nPack up your binoculars and join us! \nRegistration is now open at https://horiconmarshbirdclub.com/bird-festival/festival-event-schedule/.

SUMMARY:Bird Lab
DESCRIPTION:Bird Lab: Saturday\, May 11 9:30am-3pm. \nBring your family out for the Horicon Marsh Bird Festival May 10-13.  Before the kids hit the trails in search of birds\, bring them into the Visitor Center to make their own binoculars! We will have a Make and Take station all weekend where kids can decorate their own binoculars with stickers\, markers and more! \nOn Saturday\, May 11\, at 11am\, join us by the picnic shelter at the education center for a bird banding demonstration with a twist\, you get to be the bird! Learn the important role bird banding plays in conservation with this hands-on activity. \nFrom 9:30-3pm on May 11\, try out your bird skills?  Can you run faster than a Peregrine Falcon can fly? Can you flap your arms faster than a hummingbird can flap their wings? Test your athletic ability at the Bird Olympics! You will be competing against the best birds in their sport. Have fun trying to beat their adaptations and learn some cool facts along the way.  Visit the classrooms to try your hand or should we say beak at eating like a bird.  Find out why a bird’s beak is critical to their survival. \nFor more information\, contact Liz Herzmann at 920-387-7893 or elizabeth.herzmann@wisconsin.gov.

SUMMARY:Wildflowers for Wildlife
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, May 18\, 9:30am-1:30pm. \nCreate a beautiful native garden with colorful flowers that attract butterflies\, birds and pollinating insects\, and find the plants to use. The Horicon Marsh Education and Visitor Center is the location for the 2024 Wildflowers for Wildlife event on Saturday\, May 18 from 9:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. The education center is located at N7725 Highway 28\, Horicon\, WI. \nNew this year\, we are partnering with a brand-new native plant business called Bombus.  Nestled in the hills of Wisconsin’s driftless area near Dodgeville\, WI\, Bombus is a woman-owned small business. The name “Bombus” comes from the Bumblebee’s scientific genus name and is a nod to the company’s commitment to the health of our native pollinators. While Bombus itself is new on the scene\, founder Corrine Daniels\, “Corrie”\, is not. She and her husband\, Patrick\, have more than 25 years of restoration and native nursery experience. Corrie formerly served as the director of Applied Ecological Services’ Taylor Creek Restoration Nurseries. She now grows natives full-time on her family’s historic dairy farm with the help of her husband\, daughters and 80 year-old father. The family is thrilled to bring life back to the former dairy farm where Corrie and her father grew up and her grandmother was born. They are equally delighted to bring you natives lovingly grown in the rich farmlands of Wisconsin. \nWhy native plants? Native landscaping restores ecosystems that once covered the Midwestern landscape but are now reduced to small parcels. Once native plants are restored\, the birds\, mammals\, reptiles and beneficial insects return too. Native plants also enrich the soil\, decrease run-off and filter pollution. In the long run\, native landscaping can save money annually in maintenance costs. Native plants have evolved to thrive in a local environment\, which means less watering\, fertilizer and time. Experts will be on hand to answer all of your questions! \nPartners include\, Bombus\, Friends of Horicon Marsh Education and Visitor Center\, WDNR\, Friends of Horicon National Wildlife Refuge and the USFWS. \nNative plants are available for pre-order until March 31\, 2024. Full flats of a single species are $69 and half flats are $38.  No mix and match.  Tax of 5.5% is not included in these prices.  The pre-order form is located here 2024 Wildflowers for Wildlife pre-order form \nInformation on native plants can be found here.  Native Plant Info \nFor the day of sale\, individual plants will be $4.50 and mix and match flats $112 (tax is included).  No additional fee if using credit cards.
