SUMMARY:Nest Box Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, March 1: 8:00am-12:30pm \nInterested in birdhouses\, but don’t know where to begin? Wondering what you can do to help cavity nesting animals? Head to the Horicon Marsh Education & Visitor Center on Saturday\, March 1st from 8:00 AM – 12:30 PM to bolster your nesting knowledge. Speakers will discuss popular nest boxes\, such as bluebirds and wood ducks. This year we will feature\, Danielle Bell as she discusses  how to provide habitat and food by incorporating native plants.  Come for a specific topic or stay for all three. Whatever you choose\, these presentations will cover many topics to “brood” about for this upcoming nest season! \nDoors will open at 8:00am so that early birds can peruse displays on cavity nesting birds\, talk with DNR experts on how to attract birds to your yard or purchase your own nesting box. A schedule of speakers is as follows. \n\n8:30 AM: Jeff Bahls\, President of the Horicon Marsh Bird Club. Wood Ducks and How we Can Help.\n\nJoin Horicon Marsh Bird Club president\, Jeff Bahls as he relays some of the lessons he has learned over the 30+ years of Wood Duck box management. The Wood Duck is Jeff’s favorite bird and it keeps him entertained about 10 months out of the year.  Jeff oversees about 170 Wood duck nest boxes annually and has produced 5\,834 ducklings since 2013.  Those boxes also produced young of 10 other species of birds. Learn how to keep those nest boxes pro”duck”tive. \n\n9:45 AM:  Danielle Bell\, owner of Native Roots Design: Providing for our Feathered Friends.\n\nBirds need more than store-bought birdseed and birdbaths to thrive; they require suitable nesting sites\, nutritious food\, and insects to feed their young. Native plants provide these essential resources while adding beauty to your landscapes. They also support pollinators like bees and butterflies\, creating a healthier\, more diverse ecosystem. In this talk\, we will explore how you can attract a variety of bird species to your yard using native plants. We’ll also highlight specific native plants that are crucial for providing food\, shelter\, and habitat for migrating and residential birds throughout the year \n\n11AM:  David Misterek\, Bluebird Restoration Association of Wisconsin Member.\n\nDave has been monitoring nearly 40 boxes at the Utica Golf Course for the last 10+ years.  His program\, Wings Over Winnebago\, will highlight the needs of bluebirds but also dive into the importance of bluebird boxes to tree swallows in Eastern Wisconsin. \nBluebird/tree swallow or wood duck boxes are available for purchase on site. The Friends of the Horicon Marsh Education and Visitor Center will provide kits and fully assembled boxes for sale. Donuts and coffee will also be available for a donation during the day. Get involved or learn more in the classrooms\, where there will be displays from local bird conservation organizations: Horicon Marsh Bird Club\, Marsh Haven Nature Center\, Wood Duck Society\, Bluebird Restoration Association of Wisconsin\, Horicon NWR\, Friends of Horicon Marsh Education and Visitor Center and Wisconsin DNR. \nFree entrance event\, and all ages are welcome. No registration required. For more information\, call 920-387-7893 or e-mail Elizabeth.herzmann@wisconsin.gov. \nThe Horicon Marsh Education and Visitor Center is located between Horicon and Mayville at N7725 Highway 28\, Horicon. SUMMARY:Bird Club Meeting: BirdCast
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, April 17th at 6:30pm \nAndrew Farnsworth Cornell Lab of Ornithology – \nBird Migration in the Era of Big Data: BirdCast perspectives on the future of monitoring migrating birds. \nJoin us at 6:30pm for the April 17th meeting of the Horicon Marsh Bird Club.  Andrew Farnsworth of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology will be speaking to us about BirdCast.  BirdCast is a collaborative project that employs the expertise of computer scientists and ornithologists to harness the power of big data to study movements of birds and more broadly\ncapture the spectacle of bird migration. Andrew will be speaking\, in particular about monitoring bird migration with data collected by citizen scientists and the US weather surveillance radar\nnetwork\, among other sources of information\, to forecast where\, when\, and how many birds will migrate and to observe these movements in near real-time at a continental scale. \nAndrew Farnsworth is a Visiting Scientist in the Center for Avian Population Studies at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. Andrew began birding at age 5 and quickly developed his long-standing fascinations with bird migration.  He and his collaborators employ science to educate and to engage audiences in conservation actions\, notably with respect to reducing light pollution impacts on nocturnally migrating birds.  He lives in New York\, NY with his wife Patricia and two daughters Aja and Elle. \nThe meeting is open to the public and is held at the Horicon Marsh Education and Visitor Center located at N7725 Highway 28\, Horicon\, WI. You can also join us via Zoom. \nRegister at https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZUlde2hpj0uGd1WzhODOPQkii_IanmJsmtu

SUMMARY:Horicon Marsh Bird Festival
DESCRIPTION:28th Horicon Marsh Bird Festival \n\nMay 8– May 12\, 2025\nHoricon Marsh Bird Club invites birders of all skill levels—as well as anyone who enjoys the great outdoors—to the Annual Horicon Marsh Bird Festival. This weekend-long event provides family-friendly activities and educational experiences designed to showcase Horicon Marsh’s role as an important habitat for birds and wildlife. The festival will include birding\, bus tours\, Whooping Crane tours\, smaller more intimate guided tours\, and so much more!  The Horicon Marsh vast wetland is both a State Wildlife Area and a National Wildlife Refuge. Originally established as habitat for migrating and nesting ducks\, it has since become a stopover for Canada Geese. Today\, Horicon Marsh is increasingly recognized and managed as a wetland ecosystem for all of its plants and animals. Horicon Marsh has been designated as a Wetland of International Importance by the Ramsar Convention and a Global Important Bird Area by the American Bird Conservancy. No group of wildlife better represents the vitality of this marsh better than its birds. Over the years\, a total of 304 species of birds have been sighted on this marsh. \nIf you’re a birder or a naturalist or just someone who enjoys the beauty of nature we encourage you to come visit Horicon Marsh. The Horicon Marsh Bird Festival will focus on introducing visitors to many of these birds at the peak of the spring migration. \nPack up your binoculars and join us! \nRegistration is open at  https://horiconmarshbirdclub.com/bird-festival/festival-event-schedule/.

SUMMARY:Family Bird Lab
DESCRIPTION:Family Bird Lab: Saturday\, May 10th\, 9:30am-3pm. \nBring your family out for the Horicon Marsh Bird Festival May 9-11th.  Before the kids hit the trails in search of birds\, bring them into the Visitor Center to make their own binoculars! We will have a Make and Take station all weekend where kids can decorate their own binoculars with stickers\, markers and more! \nFrom 9:30-3pm on May 10\, try out your bird skills?  Can you run faster than a Peregrine Falcon can fly? Can you flap your arms faster than a hummingbird can flap their wings? Test your athletic ability at the Bird Olympics! You will be competing against the best birds in their sport. Have fun trying to beat their adaptations and learn some cool facts along the way.  Visit the classrooms to try your hand or should we say beak at eating like a bird.  Find out why a bird’s beak is critical to their survival. \nThis FREE program will be held at the Horicon Marsh Education and Visitor Center at the State Wildlife Area located at N7725 State Road 28\, Horicon\, WI\, 53032. \nFor more information\, contact Liz Herzmann at 920-387-7893 or elizabeth.herzmann@wisconsin.gov or Jennifer Kilburg at jennifer.kilburg@wisconsin.gov
