SUMMARY:Horicon Marsh Bird Club Meeting: Wood Duck Research
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, March 16th\, 6:30-8pm \nWood Duck Research \nAndrew Greenawalt is a current Graduate Research Assistant at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. His  research focuses on wood duck population  and migration chronology. Greenawalt used novel technology to understand migratory patterns\, stopover locations\, and annual cycles of wood ducks that breed in Wisconsin. He will soon develop reports and manuscripts for publication of the findings and hope to use some of this information to guide wood duck population management for the future within the Upper Mississippi Great Lakes Region. \nAndy has captured and marked over 1\,000 wood ducks in his two-year thesis research and deployed 300 geolocators (on female wood ducks) to a subset of theses capture individuals. With this collected data he can then examine migratory patterns\, migratory stopovers\, and winter/summer distribution. Greenawalt plans to examine harvest distribution data from band-recovery data and identify important areas along the wood duck annual cycle. \nNo registration is required.  Please meet in the lower level auditorium of the Horicon Marsh Education and Visitor Center located at N7725 Highway 28\, Horicon\, WI.  For additional information please contact Liz Herzmann at 920-210-9054 or elizabeth.herzmann@wisconsin.gov. \n

SUMMARY:Bees\, Blooms and Your Native Garden Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Bees\, Blooms and Your Native Garden Workshop\, April 1\, 10am-12pm \nPollinator gardening is on the rise as “wild” gardens have become a trend.  Join Master Gardener\, Jennifer Lazewski\, on Saturday\, April 1 from 10am-12pm for a presentation and garden design workshop.  Help pollinators thrive with native plants and continuous blooms! Travel through the seasons from spring to fall learning about native bees\, how to identify them\, and the native plants that support them. \nImmediately following the presentation\, you are invited to join Jennifer and DNR staff for a hands-on native garden planning workshop.  We will provide you with a grid and plant templates to help you create your own native garden masterpiece.  If possible\, please bring along a Google Earth printout of your yard\, along with the space dimensions\, lighting and soil type of the desired area. We would love to offer you suggestions and ideas to help transform your yard into a pollinator paradise! \nAs a special perk for workshop participants\, the pre-order sale for our Wildflowers for Wildlife native plant sale will be held open a few days extra for those that would like to order plants.  You can find the pre-order form here.  2023 Wildflowers for Wildlife pre-order form. \nJennifer Lazewski has been a Master Gardener Volunteer in Milwaukee County since 2015. She focuses on native plants and gardening for pollinators\, birds\, and other wildlife. Jennifer is also a Master Naturalist who volunteers in land management and community science projects such as the Bumble Bee Brigade. She continues to expand the native habitat in her urban Wauwatosa yard and learn more about the different insects\, birds and other wildlife that live in it. \nThe event will be held at the Horicon Marsh Education and Visitor Center located at N7725 Highway 28\, Horicon\, WI.  Free and no registration required.  Contact Liz Herzmann at 920-387-7893 or elizabeth.herzmann@wisconsin.gov for information.

SUMMARY:Wildflowers for Wildlife (Off-site at Horicon National Wildlife Refuge)
DESCRIPTION:Learn how to create a beautiful garden with colorful flowers that attract butterflies\, birds and pollinating insects\, and find the plants to use. Horicon National Wildlife Refuge and Visitor Center is the location for the 2023 Wildflowers for Wildlife event Saturday\, May 20 from 9:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. The refuge visitor center is located off County Road Z about 3.5 miles south of State Highway 49.  W4279 Headquarters Rd\, Mayville\, WI 53050 \nThe 10th annual “Wildflowers for Wildlife: enhancing your own backyard” is sponsored by the Friends of Horicon Marsh Education and Visitor Center and Friends of Horicon National Wildlife Refuge. They have partnered with Taylor Creek Restoration Nurseries and RES for a native plant sale that will help enhance your backyard\, schoolyard\, park or natural area and in turn\, benefit wildlife. \nWhy native plants? Native landscaping restores ecosystems that once covered the Midwestern landscape but are now reduced to small parcels. Once native plants are restored\, the birds\, mammals\, reptiles and beneficial insects return too. Native plants also enrich the soil\, decrease run-off and filter pollution. In the long run\, native landscaping can save money annually in maintenance costs. Native plants have evolved to thrive in a local environment\, which means less watering\, fertilizer and time. Experts will be on hand to answer all of your questions! \nNative landscapes offer hands-on opportunities for people of all ages to learn about habitats and ecosystems. A native landscape also provides the ideal setting for bird and butterfly watching\, photography and nature walks. \nNative plants are available for pre-order until March 31\, 2023. The form is at: 2023 Wildflowers for Wildlife pre-order form \nInformation on native plants can be found here.  Native Plant Info \nIndividual plants will be $3 and mix and match flats $72 the day of the sale. For more information about plants\, terlf9@gmail.com or by phone at (920) 923-6891 and 920-387-7893 for the event. \nHoricon National Wildlife Refuge and Visitor Center: W4279 Headquarters Rd\, Mayville\, WI 53050.

SUMMARY:Horicon Marsh Paddle
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, June 24\, from 7:30am to 1:00 p.m. you can join fellow outdoor enthusiasts to paddle the six and a half mile water trail through the Horicon Marsh State Wildlife Area. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources’ wildlife staff will be on hand to help guide you through while educating you about wildlife of the marsh as you make your way downstream through Horicon Marsh into the Rock River. \nEquipment not provided\, you must bring your own canoe/kayak\, paddles\, PFD\, water and snacks. \nFeatures of the day are the 6.5 mile trail at the Horicon Marsh State Wildlife Area\, listening and talking to wildlife staff from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) who will be posted at various stopping places along the canoe/kayak trail\, a free shuttle back to your vehicle\, help loading and unloading your vessel\, and free parking. The trail starts at the Green Head Boat Landing and ends at Nebraska St. Landing in Horicon. \nThere is an open launch time between 7:30 and 10:00am at the Green Head Boat Landing.  If you launch after these times\, you run the risk of missing the shuttle back to your car.  The route will take 3-4 hours depending on the wind conditions.  Please plan accordingly.  This can be a challenging paddle in windy conditions. Not recommended for your first ever paddle. \nThe DNR wildlife staff will briefly cover topics related to the marsh’s wildlife and will be available for any other questions.  This is a great opportunity to talk with experts and learn from some of the people that work at the marsh every day.  Restroom facilities will be available at the beginning and end of the trail.  No registration is required. \nYou must provide your own canoe/kayak and a free shuttle will be provided by Johnson Bus. It will run from 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. from Nebraska Street Boat Landing in Horicon back to your vehicle at Green Head Boat Landing.  The shuttle will move people\, not equipment. \nFor trail maps or other paddle Horicon Marsh information\, contact 920-387-7893 or go to www.horiconmarsh.org.
